September 26, 2009- San Jose, CA
Annie Shiraishi went 2-1 today to take silver in the women’s 48 kilogram category. Annie, who was the 2008 Olympic Alternate and 2008 National Champion in the 52 kilogram category, won this division last year.
In the first round, she faced a youngster from the United States, throwing her for yuko with a left-sided kouchigari.
In the second round, she beat a player from Ecuador to put her in the finals against Katelyn Bouyssou, whom she had faced in the finals of the US Open last year.
Bouyssou and Annie were even until Annie made the mistake of coming in a weak attack, which Bouyssou countered for wazari. Annie was unable to overcome the defecit and had to settle for silver.
This was Annie’s third tournament since having major surgery on her shoulder earlier this year. She won silver at the Golden State Open a few weeks ago, followed by a Gold at our East Bay Invitational. She now turns her attention to the Rendez Vous Canada Tournament, which will be held in Montreal October 16-17.
