Sumo demonstration at EBJI
Dear EBJI Members and Families
Please join us for this rare event!
Two sumo wrestlers will be demonstrating and teaching various sumo techniques and stretches for us at EBJI on July 24 (Thursday) from 5:30pm-6:30pm.
Byambajav “Byamba” Ulambayar was born in Mongolia and was recruited at age 15 by former sumo grand champion Shibatayama to join professional sumo in Japan. Byamba spent five years in professional sumo in Japan and became the highest ranked, or rikishi, in his heya, or stable or team. But due to an injury at age 20, he retired from professional sumo in Japan. He does, however, compete in sumo tournaments around the world from the U.S. to Mongolia to Germany and is a current two-time world champion of the World Sumo Championships. Byamba only speaks Mongolian and Japanese.
(Byamba is 6′ and 340 pounds)
Kelly Gneiting is a current three-time U.S. Sumo Champion and has also spent several months of training in Japan, where he became familiar with their training methods. (Kelly is 6′ and 440 pounds)
